IT all depends on what ou want them for, if you just want them for reference then I woudl go with
Monster Manual
RAces fo Faerun
Manual of the Planes
Faiths and Patheons
Feind Folio
Dieties and Demigods focuses more on mythological dieties that exist in our myths but ti does have the listing for Bahamut the god of dragons.
If you actually want to get inot playign D&D then you will also need
Players Handbook
this shows base races as they are not listed in the expansions other than saying to refer to the PH.
If you are runnign the game you will also need
Dungean Masters Guidebook
Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting
Forgotten Realms Dungean Master Screen
I still need to get a few things off the first list for reference puproses as I am gettign ready to start a game. Almost all of those books run $40 here but a few of them are a little less but not much($30-$35)
Just the books I have right now ran me about $250-$300

Well the Players handbook And Dungean masters Guide are $35 here and that si for the new ones that are comign out in June the monster Manual is 35 as are most fo the other books but the campaign settign si 40 here. It also depends were you go here I have seen the Players handbook go for $20 at a comic book store.
IT could be because they are printed here and they have to make up for shipping costs, or it could just be WotC being gready.
Out fo curiousity why are you gettign the core rule books after saying you don't care what they say

Well for reference and reading you coudl probably forgoe the MM if you wanted as it si mostly stats adn abilities. They do list a littel info regarding description, culture, and other related facts but it wouldn't be th emost interesting fo reads.
I don't have the fiend folio yet so I can't say much there.
Faiths and Patheons is an interesting read as it gives history and relationships for all the Forgotten realm Deities plus it has info on their specialty preists.
I didn't pick up races of Faerun yet as I have all th einfo I need to start my game in the geography chapter of the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting so no info there either.
Manual of the planes si only a good read if you are intested in the outer planes as it has listings and descriptions for them.
The Forgotten Realm Campaign setting is one I would recommend as it has info on different sites in Faerun as well as soem base info on the races. IT also lists soem notable NPCs (such as Drizzt and Elminster) and info on soem of th eorganizations.
I still think you shoudl consider trying the game itself

Reason Canada has to pay more is the US Dollar is valued slightly higher than the Canadian Dollar
. Followed by Marketting accessing it to be a good idea to use the x9.99 standard for pricing.
For a god reference however, if you're more interesting in Faerunian gods, get Faiths and Pantheons instead of DDg.
Hint.
Put off buying PHB, DMG, and MM for a few monthes, revised rulesets and books come out this summer.

I heard the MM won't have to many changes but I do agree about the PH and DG in fact I will probably pick up new copies after they come out in June.
I just think if you are spending this much on core rulebooks you shoudl at least give the game a try
The only good thing I saw in Deities and Demigods was the 3rd edition stats for Bahamut, which si why I didn't pick it up.

MM will have a few massive changes.
There are sweeping changes to the Damage Reduction standards and system in 3.5 (for instance the Pit Fiend will just have 15/Holysilver now).
[ Edit / Add ]
ALso of note, Manual of the Planes has stats for Bahamut and Tiamat as well.

I wasn't aware fo the damage reduction change, this means I will need to replace 3 of my books when the new ones coem out. Worst fo all they came out right after I am startign a new game.
I was aware that the listings were in the manual fo the planes, which si why I do have a copy of that

I just think that if you are spendign that much on the books you shoudl get the most out of them, basically get yoru moneys worth. I wasn't trying to alienate you
Yes th enew books will cost more, a guy at one fo the gaming stores I went to said the new PH and DG will each cost $35. I didn't asl him about the MM as I wasn't aware I woudl need the new one at the time. Either way I am looking at aroudn $100 in either June or July to update my core rule books

SO that would still be around 500 for a full library, then add all the books by R.A. Salvator...
Too rich for my taste. I want to become a thief.

Well if you don't have the PH, DG, and MM already then you aren't paying any more than you figureed before. I have the original 3rd edition copies and so I have to replaces them then the revised comes out.
Some fo the R.A. Salvatore books are available in collections (I got the Legacy of th eDrow series in a paperback collection for about $20) and if you get lucky you can find some fo them used (if you don't mind used books). You don't have to get all fo Salvatores books at once though, especially if you are reading the core books.
BAsically if you pace yourself it won't cost any more than your first estimate, and if you spread those out it coudl be a little easier on yoru pocket book.
